The EU allocates 90 billion euros to Ukraine: Russia will pay for reparations.
According to ТСН: The European Union has decided to provide significant financial assistance to Ukraine, which will be covered by the frozen assets of the aggressor country. The issue of using these assets has sparked much discussion. Some experts view the decision as a compromise, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is confident in its effectiveness.
"The decision is very strong"
The president responded to concerns from some journalists who doubted whether this step was an alternative to a full-fledged reparations mechanism.
"I will answer. Some journalists believe that this is an alternative to reparations loans and does not look as strong... I believe that the decision is very strong. For us, it was very important to ensure funding for our state, people, army, civilians, children, everyone," Zelensky emphasized.
He stressed that the agreement with European leaders guarantees Ukraine 90 billion euros (from a total pool of 210 billion) for two years — 45 billion per year.
Main condition: the aggressor pays
The main aspect of this agreement is a direct link to Russian reparations. Zelensky emphasized that this is not just a loan that will burden the Ukrainian budget.
"We have received an interest-free loan of 90 billion, and Ukraine will repay this money to the European Union only when Russia pays reparations to Ukraine in the same amount," the president explained.
According to him, this approach will not allow the world to 'forget' the need to financially punish the aggressor.
"Russia will do everything to make the world forget about this. There is a clear link here... I congratulate all partners. This is a historic decision," the head of state summarized.
Referring to a new trilateral meeting with the USA regarding Ukraine and Russia, Zelensky emphasized the intensity of desires to end the war, especially after recent meetings in Geneva, Miami, and Berlin.
The decision made by the European Union could significantly strengthen Ukraine's financial base during a period when the country continues to cope with the consequences of aggression. Its implementation will depend on how quickly Russia begins to fulfill its reparations obligations, which will, in turn, affect Ukraine's economic stability in the coming years.
