Slovakia's Mixed Signals: Fico Calls for Talks with Moscow After Constanta Blast.
Slovakia Stands with Romania
According to Espreso.tv: On June 5, a marine drone explosion struck the Romanian port of Constanta. In response, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed solidarity with Romania. He stressed the need to open dialogues with Moscow, stating:
“I do not care whether it is a delegation of EU leaders, a chancellor, or the president of a major country. We must start talking.”- Robert Fico.
Backing Ukraine
Meanwhile, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar met with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha in Vinnytsia, where he reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Blanar emphasized that the war must end in line with international law and the UN Charter.
“A peaceful, sustainable solution that respects international law and does not violate territorial integrity—our goal is absolutely clear.”- Juraj Blanar.
The talks also covered support for launching the first and subsequent negotiation clusters on Ukraine’s EU membership. Both sides explored possibilities for:
- strengthening air defense;
- cooperation in the defense industry;
- applying sanctions pressure on Russia.
Blanar confirmed Slovakia’s readiness to back these initiatives, signaling the country’s commitment to regional stability and Ukraine’s European integration aspirations.
These events highlight the importance of international cooperation for security, especially amid rising tensions in the Black Sea region. Slovakia’s dual stance—supporting both Ukraine and Romania while advocating talks with Moscow—reflects a push for stability and a willingness to engage diplomatically. This approach could shape future dynamics within the European Union and NATO.
