ISW: The Kremlin seeks total political control over Ukraine, not just occupation.
The report from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) states that Russia's main goal in the conflict with Ukraine is political control over the entire country, not just the occupation of certain regions. Analyzing the statement of the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, analysts see it as an attempt by Russia to violate Ukrainian sovereignty through demands such as the repeal of language and religion laws.
“Considered separately from the 'root causes', Russia's territorial demands make it clear: the Kremlin aims to achieve all its goals without any compromises. Russia seeks the demilitarization of Ukraine, desires a ban on NATO membership, and attempts to change the government using both military and diplomatic means,” experts emphasize.
According to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, reliable security guarantees for Ukraine are the best deterrent for Russia, as dictator Putin cannot be trusted.
In conclusion, the ISW report indicates that the Kremlin is not interested in compromises; its goals in Ukraine are to establish total political control over the state through various means, including military and diplomatic actions.
