Lyudmyla Kichenok repeated the national record

Ukrainian tennis player Lyudmyla Kichenok repeated the national record in the WTA rankings. This happened after the rankings update on Monday, September 23. At the beginning of September, Kichenok set a new national record in doubles. After winning with Jelena Ostapenko at the US Open, the Ukrainian tennis player moved up to fifth place in the world rankings. Two weeks later, Kichenok again set a national record: she moved up to third place in the world rankings. The Ukrainian surpassed Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and Belgian Elise Mertens, who lost three positions in the rankings. In addition to updating the national record in doubles, Lyudmyla Kichenok also equaled Ukraine's record in all international rankings. Previously, it was solely held by Elina Svitolina, who in September 2017 rose to the third place in the WTA singles rankings.

In total, in the history, only three Ukrainian tennis players have risen to the top-5 in the WTA and ATP global rankings. In 1994, Andriy Medvedev held the fourth place in the men's singles rankings.

Lyudmyla Kichenok is a 32-year-old Ukrainian tennis player from Dnipro. Winner of 11 WTA doubles titles, five of them with Jelena Ostapenko. Winner of two Grand Slams: the 2024 US Open in doubles and the 2023 Wimbledon mixed. This season, she won three trophies: in Eastbourne, Brisbane, and New York. This also equals Lyudmyla's personal record for most tournament wins in a year - the same number she achieved in 2022.
