Euro sets historical record in Ukraine: why the exchange rate soared to 49.51.

According to ТСН: During the week, there was an increase in the euro exchange rate in the currency market of Ukraine. As of December 12, its official exchange rate to the hryvnia reached a historical record - 49.51 UAH, while on December 8 it was 48.99 UAH.

Reasons for the euro exchange rate increase

Banker Taras Lesoviy explained why the euro exchange rate rose. The main reason for this increase, according to him, lies in the global situation. The official exchange rate of the European Central Bank increased from 1.03 to 1.17 dollars per euro from January 1 to December 12, 2025.

"As of December 11, the average exchange rate of the euro to the dollar was 1 to 1.17. For example, on November 20, the average exchange rate was at 1 to 1.15, and as of December 1 - 1 to 1.16," the banker explained.

Impact of demand for the euro currency

Lesoviy also added that the increased demand for euros from Ukrainian businesses and importers, who actively use euros in transactions, also affects its exchange rate.

The specialist predicts that in the future, the situation with the demand for euros in the interbank market may stabilize if the National Bank of Ukraine can carry out interventions in euros, as the European Union becomes the main financial "donor" of Ukraine.

In addition, financial experts discussed the question of what is better to choose - cheap dollars or more expensive euros. The last important economic events included the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of the law on the state budget for 2026, which also influenced the exchange rate.

Thus, the increase in the euro exchange rate occurs against the backdrop of global financial trends and increased demand from Ukrainian businesses. Experts believe that further actions of the National Bank of Ukraine could significantly affect the stabilization of the situation in the currency market, especially in the conditions of financial support from the European Union. This dynamic creates important conditions for business and the economy of the country as a whole.
