Tax increases on slot machines may lead to more illegal gambling

According to The Sun: According to a new report, rising taxes on slot machines will drive players to seek illegal alternatives. The gaming industry expresses concern following former Prime Minister Gordon Brown's proposal to raise the tax on slot machines to 50%.

Experts at the Adam Smith Institute believe such a budget boom could significantly exacerbate the problem of illegal gambling businesses.

Maxwell Marloue, director of public affairs at ASI, noted:

“Adult centers ensure that players are not sold alcohol during betting and provide protection for them throughout the experience.'

He also emphasized that

“while there is nothing wrong with online gambling, it goes on without any additional protective measures in case the situation becomes unpleasant.'

Marloue further stated:

“If the government considers gambling a public health issue, then raising taxes and regulatory barriers for safer forms of betting is irrational.'

Christopher Snowden, head of the lifestyle department at IEA, believes:

“We have a government that seems to be trying to drive players to the unregulated offshore market that does not create jobs and does not pay taxes in this country.'

ASI and IEA urged ministers to abolish the tax on slot machines or lower it to 15% in line with the overall betting tax. They also propose to reform or completely abolish the 80/20 rule that could free up to £700 million in additional gambling revenue.

Moreover, they argue that betting and payout limits on machines need to be updated in line with inflation, particularly increasing the stake from £2 to £3.21 and maximum payouts to £800.

Calls to the government to lower taxes and review regulatory barriers reflect the industry's concerns over potential negative consequences for legal gambling. It is crucial for the authorities to consider these factors when making decisions.
