In 1998, at the age of 48, Joe Bugner won the heavyweight world champion title after 13 losses.

However, his career was not without criticism. In 1971, he defeated fan favorite Henry Cooper, but later became a target for mockery after losing to Frank Bruno in 1987.

Unlike many of his opponents, Bugner was not a gentle giant in life. He had a reputation tied to domestic violence.

“He was a personality and played the bad guy when we were doing the promotion for the fight.”

Challenges and Highlights

Born in Hungary, Bugner emigrated with his family from a communist country when he was just six years old. He did not know his father.

He grew up in Cambridgeshire, where he earned the title of youth champion in discus.

Although he lost his first professional fight in 1967, he later won 18 bouts and became heavyweight champion.

“My biggest regret in life is I think I robbed Henry of the opportunity to end his career on a high note.”
