McIlroy on fan behavior: Wished they would let the dogs loose.
Inappropriate fan behavior at the Bethpage Battle
According to The Sun: Rory McIlroy expressed the wish that the police would 'let the dogs loose,' reacting to the 'unacceptable' behavior of fans during the Bethpage Battle.
The player admitted it was 'very nice' to respond to the insults, scoring 3.5 points and, most importantly, holding the Ryder Cup trophy from Europe in his hands.
The situation became so uncontrollable that the police had to take measures, deploying patrols and dogs to restore order.
Although a few unruly fans were ejected, McIlroy expressed the desire for them to deal with canine units.
“I would like them to let the dogs loose,” he said at a press conference after Europe's alarming 15-13 victory.
“The police and security did an outstanding job. Nothing happened, there were no physical altercations, but the language and behavior were absolutely unacceptable, and we should never accept this in golf.”
Personal life struggles and support from his wife
McIlroy also emphasized the hardships he faced during these matches, as he experienced brutal taunts about his personal life that even his wife Erica could hear.
He praised her for 'class, resilience, and dignity' in response to the insults and physical attacks from aggressive fans.
Emotionally exhausted, McIlroy noted that what happened is unacceptable and expressed his love for his wife.
“Erica is doing well. She is a very strong woman. She handled everything, as always,” he said.
His friend Lowry also joined in supporting his wife: “I was with Erica McIlroy for two days, and the amount of abuse she received was simply staggering.”
