EU Leaders Unanimously Extend Russia Sanctions for Another Year.
Sanctions Against Russia Renewed
According to Novyny.live: During a European Council session on June 18, 2026, all 27 EU heads of state and government unanimously agreed to extend sectoral sanctions against Russia for an additional 12 months. The deliberation process lasted roughly three and a half hours before the decision was finalized. This move is part of the EU's broader strategy to support Ukraine and respond to Russian actions.
Individual sanctions targeting specific persons will undergo review every six months. As Maria Tomasik stated,
“discussions concerning Ukraine have concluded. EU leaders have adopted the summit's conclusions on Ukraine and decided to prolong the sanctions against Russia for 12 months.”This decision underscores the bloc's commitment to standing with Ukraine in its resistance against Russian aggression.
The renewal highlights the EU's unified stance on foreign policy, a critical factor for regional security beyond just Ukraine. The upcoming six-month period will be pivotal for assessing the sanctions' effectiveness and their impact on Russia's political and economic landscape, as well as on EU-Russia relations.
