EU Leaders Extend Sanctions Against Russia for One Year – How Hungary Shifted Its Stance.
European Council Approves Renewal of Russia Sanctions
According to Espreso.tv: After four hours of debate, the European Council concluded its first agenda item with a unanimous decision to extend sectoral sanctions against the Russian Federation for another 12 months. All 27 member states voted in favor, marking a significant display of unity. The final text was heavily amended at Hungary's request, making the approval process challenging, but it ultimately secured backing from every EU country for the first time in 18 months.
According to expert H. Magyar, the summit's final document on Ukraine only included language that had already been agreed upon by consensus several years earlier. This approach, he noted, allowed for progress without confrontational tactics. Magyar emphasized the value of compromise, stating that while the issue of sanction renewals remains highly contentious, EU leaders managed to reach an agreement this time. Previously, sanctions against Russia were extended every six months, but the new decision lengthens the renewal period.
"This is how you can work if you come not to overturn tables and stoke fears, but to seek compromises."

Impact of Sanctions on Europe's Geopolitical Landscape
Extending sanctions against Russia for a full year represents a critical step amid the current geopolitical situation in Europe. It underscores the solidarity of EU member states in supporting Ukraine and maintaining pressure on Moscow. The longer duration of these restrictions could further strain Russia's financial and trade ties with Europe, potentially deepening economic challenges for the country. Observers will now watch for the EU's next moves in this area and their implications for regional security.
