Lithuanian Intelligence Warns: Russia Preparing for a 6-10 Year Conflict.
2026 National Security Threat Assessment
According to UATV: A Lithuanian intelligence report, titled the '2026 National Security Threat Assessment,' concludes that Russia intends to continue its war against Ukraine despite its economic difficulties. The analysis states that Russia plans to sustain high military spending and strengthen its armed forces, even in the context of a prolonged conflict lasting 6 to 10 years.
The report further indicates that over such an extended period, Russia would be capable of staffing new military units. However, it notes that replenishing strategic stockpiles of weapons and ammunition would pose a significant challenge for Russia. In a worst-case scenario, should sanctions be lifted, Russia could initiate a limited conflict in the Baltic region within two years.
The Critical Need to Support Ukraine
European Commissioner for Defense, Andrius Kubilius, has stated that Ukraine requires over 2,000 missiles for its air defense systems. For context, it is known that Ukraine used approximately 700 Patriot missiles during the past winter alone. This starkly highlights the urgent need for sustained international military aid as Ukraine faces immense challenges in the ongoing war.
The Lithuanian intelligence findings underscore the persistent threat Russia poses not only to Ukraine but to European security as a whole. The potential for a protracted war and the risk of military escalation in the Baltic region demand greater attention from EU nations to their defense strategies and to supporting Ukraine. International cooperation and the supply of military equipment, particularly air defense systems, remain critically important for strengthening Ukraine's resilience and preventing a broader conflict.
