Lithuania Moves to Universal Military Service: Who Will Be Affected by the Draft.
Lithuania’s Shift Toward Universal Conscription
According to UATV: Lithuania has announced a transition to universal military service, as stated by Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas. The decision is driven by the need to build infrastructure, train instructors, and equip the armed forces. Under the new plan, mandatory conscription will apply to men aged 18 to 21.
In 2026, approximately 5,000 conscripts will undergo compulsory military service, while an additional 3,000 individuals are expected to join the army voluntarily. The defense minister noted that
“each year, the armed forces are capable of training more people. Therefore, we are steadily moving toward universal military service while maintaining a high level of preparedness,”said Robertas Kaunas.
Support for the Initiative
Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė has backed the initiative, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the country’s defense capabilities. Given the global security situation, Lithuanian officials believe that reforming the military service system will enhance the readiness of the armed forces to address various challenges. Implementing universal conscription is seen as a crucial step in developing the military and bolstering national security.
Lithuania’s move toward universal military service reflects growing security concerns in the region, particularly amid increasing military threats from neighboring countries. This initiative could also influence the defense strategies of other Baltic and European nations, underscoring the importance of collective security in the face of modern challenges. The shift in military service policy may not only improve army combat readiness but also foster a sense of national identity among young people.
