The family of Diogo Jota received compensation
According to The Sun: The family of Diogo Jota received a full payout of £14.5 million that remained from his contract after the tragic death of the striker.
The Liverpool star died in July along with his brother Andre Silva in a car accident, leaving behind his wife Ruta Kardas and three children.
GettyJota earned about £140,000 a week, and the contract, which was due to expire in 2027, had two years remaining.
Club's response and support for the family
Coach Arne Slot confirmed that the contract would be honored by the club's owners Fenway Sports Group. He noted:
“Maybe people think it's okay, but it's not in football.
“Owners are generally criticized, just like coaches, but the way they handled this situation by paying his wife and children all the money from the contract deserves praise.”
After Jota's death, Slot started spending £426 million, which resulted in signing agreements with forwards Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak for a total of £199 million.
The head coach told TNT Sports:
“Unfortunately, we had to sign more players than we planned. That's why our spending was higher than expected.”
He also noted how the city reacted to the tragedy:
“The anger and sorrow in the city makes my work at this club especially meaningful.”
Memory of Jota
In memory of Jota, his number 20 will be retired permanently.
“He was an extraordinary person. He was loved not only for his football achievements but for being a genuine person.”
Chelsea players also donated a significant part of their £11.4 million bonus for winning the Club World Championship to Jota's family.
