The Australian player has mostly competed in local tournaments, seniors' tours, and exhibitions this year. However, 'The Wizard' is ready to use this new league as a launching pad for a return to competing with the best darts players in the world.
Whitlock told Fox Sports: “I’m a little nervous, there’s pressure on me.”
“I’ve won a few local tournaments that are really tough. Our local competitions have great players.”
Whitlock is well aware of whom he will have to compete against as he returns to the top of darts. The two-time World Championship finalist faced Luke Littler at the World Series of Darts in Amsterdam last month.
Littler, the 18-year-old player, managed to come back from a 4-3 deficit in the last match and win in the opening round with a score of 6-4. But Whitlock knows how to defeat 'The Nuke', as they have competed many times during lockdown, and he has always come out on top.
Whitlock noted:
“I played Luke Littler recently and pushed him hard, so my form is good.”
“I had my difficulties, and suddenly he pulled off some big winning shots, and I lost the chance to move into the deciding round.”
“It could have been 5-5, and I would have had a chance, but it was a great game.”
“Funny enough, I played Luke Littler during lockdown, and I never lost to him.”
“Back then he was just a kid, but we have a good history.”
Simon Whitlock's return to the global stage of darts could be an important milestone not only in his career but for the entire darts community, as such an experienced player always generates interest. It will be exciting to watch his recovery to the highest levels of play as he strives to prove that he can still compete with the best.
