The Most Powerful Explosion in the Universe: The Webb Telescope Sees Light from 13 Billion Years Ago.
According to ТСН: Scientists recorded a 10-second gamma-ray burst from a cosmic point located 13 billion light years from Earth. This signal has been named GRB 250314A and is likely the result of a supernova explosion that occurred just 730 million years after the Big Bang.
Two satellites confirmed the source of the signal, and the James Webb Telescope (JWST) conducted detailed observations, capturing the fading light of the explosion. Scientists note that gamma-ray bursts are powerful invisible waves of energy that arise during star explosions.
Research Features
The research results showed that this early supernova resembles modern supernovae, despite billions of years of separation. Red supernovae are characterized by high energy and might provide clues about the formation of the first stars and galaxies in the Universe.
“In the last 50 years, only a few gamma-ray bursts have been recorded in the first billion years after the Big Bang. This is a very rare and exciting discovery,” said Andrew Levan from Radboud University.
New data will help scientists better understand the early stages of the Universe's evolution. At that time, stars were more massive, hotter, and exploded with more force than they do now.
It should be noted that scientists also discovered a huge black hole escaping from a galaxy for the first time. The black hole, named RBH-1, has a mass of at least 10 million suns and was spotted in 2023 at a distance of 7.5 billion light years.
The discovery of GRB 250314A significantly contributes to our understanding of the early Universe, as each new gamma-ray burst provides important information about the processes taking place within it. Such studies are key to unraveling many mysteries of the cosmos and the evolution of its development.
