Self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has privately decided to pardon German citizen Rico Krieger, who was sentenced to death. This was reported by the agency "Belta".

According to media reports, Krieger appealed to Lukashenko for a pardon.

«The head of state, taking into account all the circumstances, made the decision to pardon», the statement said.

Belarusian television published an interview with the condemned German. In the video, the man confessed that he planned a terrorist attack. The interview may have been filmed under coercion, according to the German publication Bild.

The video showed that 30-year-old Rico Krieger from Berlin worked as a paramedic for the Red Cross. He was detained in Belarus in November 2023 and accused of working for Ukraine and sentenced to death. The trial took place in June 2024 in Minsk and lasted less than a month. The German was sentenced to death for «terrorism» and «participation in an extremist community».

In the video, where the words of the condemned were translated into Russian, Krieger explained that he was photographing military objects in Belarus on behalf of the SBU, and then left a bomb near the Ozerische railway station near Minsk. The man admitted his guilt and stated that he hoped for a pardon from Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.
