Captain of Europe Donald: US players will receive money for the Ryder Cup.
According to The Sun: Captain of the European team Luke Donald expressed concern that American players at the Ryder Cup might face negative reactions from their fans due to receiving rewards for participating in the tournament at Bethpage.
He noted that the chances of fervent New York fans expressing their emotions are quite high, especially if the team starts poorly. Each of the American players receives $500,000 for participation.
GettyThe European team displayed impressive results, achieving a complete victory in the first four matches of the Ryder Cup in Rome two years ago, which laid the foundation for a subsequent victory with a score of 16 ½ – 11 ½.
Many experts believe that US captain Keegan Bradley might have made a mistake by choosing the format of the doubles matches at the start, as this format traditionally suits the European team better.
Luke Donald's Position
When asked if a fast start from Europe could provoke dissatisfaction regarding pay for participation, Donald responded:
“That could happen. We all know how high ticket prices are, averaging around $750 each. It will be an expensive affair for a family of four.”
Donald also emphasized that American players who do not fulfill their commitments might hear the wrath of New York regarding their financial rewards.
In Rome, Patrick Cantlay led a protest by American players, refusing to wear the team cap due to the lack of 'compensation'. This year, the situation has changed, but it left a bad taste for both sides of the ocean.
When Donald found out that American players are getting paid for the first time – $200,000 will stay with them, while the remaining $300,000 will be donated to charity – he immediately contacted all 12 European players who played in Rome.
