Although Hatton was a devoted fan of Manchester City, he earned the respect of Manchester United supporters as well. Littler, born in January 2007, did not have the chance to see Hatton at the height of his fame.
Hatton's Legacy
The young athlete does not remember Hatton's bouts with Floyd Mayweather, Paul Malignaggi, and Manny Pacquiao, which drew huge crowds in Las Vegas. Littler, the current world champion in darts, was not even born when Hatton achieved his iconic victory in June 2005, defeating Australian Kostya Tszyu at the MEN arena in Manchester.
However, Hatton's legacy and his friendly attitude towards fans continue to live on. The 18-year-old Littler, a big fan of boxing, is well aware of Hatton's achievements.
“When I’m bored at night, I watch old boxing matches,” said Littler at the opening of a new pop-up store.
Littler also said that his fellow dart players expressed their condolences regarding Hatton's loss: “When we learned about his death, I and others talked a lot about what a wonderful person he was.”
“It’s sad because his fights flooded Instagram and Facebook,” he added.
Hatton's family released a statement expressing their grief. It stated: “We are all bewildered by the events of the last few days. Despite his well-known struggles, Richard, in our opinion, was in a good place.”
“He was looking forward to the future; his bag was packed for a trip to Dubai to prepare for a return to the ring,” the statement read.
The memory of Ricky Hatton will live on in the hearts of countless boxing fans who remember not only his achievements in the ring but also his pleasant personality outside of it. Hatton's legacy inspires a new generation of athletes striving for success in this sport.
