Two Decades of Rescuing the Homeless: Lviv’s ‘Oselia’ and Its Unique Self-Help Method.
About the 'Oselia Mutual Aid Community'
According to Espreso.tv: Natalia Sanotska leads the 'Oselia Mutual Aid Community,' an organization that has spent over a decade assisting homeless individuals by fostering a supportive environment where they can access shelter, encouragement, and opportunities for social reintegration. Established in 2003, Oselia has operated for more than 20 years, earning a reputation as a vital provider of social services. Each week, the group distributes hot soup to the homeless in Lviv, a practice it has upheld for 23 consecutive years. Currently, 30 residents with difficult life stories live at Oselia, finding it a crucial space for rebuilding their lives. 'Our work follows a special approach called help to self-help,' Sanotska explains. This method empowers people not only to receive aid but also to take active steps toward improving their own circumstances.
Community Support and Engagement
The community operates a social dormitory designed to help people transition out of homelessness, staffed by a doctor and social workers. Since the war began in Ukraine, many individuals from the eastern regions have arrived at Oselia, highlighting the growing demand for such support. 'We work together to earn our keep and assist those who are even less fortunate than us,' says Sanotska. She stresses the value of independence:
“I don't know how you should live—that's your life, and you have to figure out what you want from it.” - Natalia Sanotska
Additionally, 29 of Oselia’s companions are currently serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with two having lost their lives. This underscores the community’s deep ties to society and its active role in supporting the country during challenging times.
“You can earn a living; you just need to get involved in the common cause,” Sanotska notes, urging participation and collaboration within the community.
The core principles of Oselia’s work include:
- reintegration
- support
- the self-help method
These elements make the organization a key component of the social safety net for homeless individuals.
The efforts of the 'Oselia Mutual Aid Community' highlight the significance of local initiatives in social protection, especially amid the economic and social hardships faced by vulnerable populations. With the onset of war in Ukraine, the need for such support has only intensified, and organizations like Oselia play a critical role in delivering aid and fostering conditions for people to rebuild their lives after experiencing severe adversity.
