Major energy supplier is giving away five days’ worth of free electricity in September – but you’ll need to be quick

According to The Sun: A major energy supplier is offering its customers five days of free electricity next month.

The company EDF Energy has announced the return of the Sunday Saver promotion, which starts this weekend. Its aim is to encourage households to save electricity by shifting usage away from peak times.

To take part, you will need a smart meter set to provide readings every 30 minutes

This can be done with simple changes, such as running the dishwasher in the morning or cooking in bulk on weekends.

The more energy you shift away from peak times, the less you will pay for electricity. For example, if you reduce your consumption by 50% between 4 PM and 7 PM, you could earn up to 16 free hours of electricity next Sunday.

But hurry: registration ends at midnight today.

To join, simply visit the Energy Hub in your MyAccount. You will also need a smart meter that provides readings every 30 minutes.

Setting up your meter is a quick process. Log into your EDF MyAccount at edfenergy.com/myaccount/login, go to the 'About Me' section, select 'Smart Meter Settings', and choose the option to submit readings every 30 minutes.

All credits for free electricity that you earn will be automatically added to your account and will be available for use next Sunday.

The promotion will last five weeks, starting from September 7, so you will have a chance to earn up to 80 free hours of electricity next month.

Keep track of your progress in the Energy Hub each week.

What help is offered by other energy suppliers?

Many energy companies offer discounts or credits to their customers when they change their electricity or gas consumption patterns.

Such programs could be useful for households this winter, as the price cap on energy rose this week.

Ovo Energy

Ovo Energy offers customers a chance to win free electricity if they reduce consumption during peak hours.

Power Move allows participants to win up to £2000 worth of free electricity.

Each month, if your peak consumption is below 15%, you enter the draw.

Ten lucky winners will receive a grand prize of £2000 worth of electricity for a year, while 500 will win £25, another 500 will win £10, and 43000 will receive £2 worth of free electricity.

To register, visit ovoenergy.com/power-move.

Scottish Power

The Power Saver program from Scottish Power allows customers to get electricity at half price from 11 AM to 4 PM every weekend.

To become a participant, you need to sign up for the Power Saver program at scottishpower.co.uk/half-price-electricity.

A smart meter is also required.

British Gas

British Gas offers half-price electricity from 11 AM to 4 PM every Sunday under the PeakSave program.

Demand for electricity on Sundays is usually lower, allowing the supplier to offer cheaper rates when load on the National Grid is reduced.

Octopus

Customers of Octopus Energy who have signed up for 'Octoplus' can participate in free electricity sessions when wholesale prices drop below zero.

The session lasts an hour, during which regular electricity costs the same, but any additional energy is free.

All participants receive a warning before each session.

E.ON

E.ON Next offers free electricity on bank holidays until March 2026.

Free hours have already been implemented on Good Friday, Easter Monday, the first bank holiday in May, and the August bank holiday.

This offer could save households £3.50 for each holiday, reducing their bill by £28 a year.

To take advantage of this offer, registration is required for the Pledge tariff, fixed for 12 months and offering rates below Ofgem's price cap, potentially saving around £50 a year for a typical household.

What help is available to pay energy bills?

There are several ways to get help paying your energy bills if you are facing difficulties.

If you are in debt, contact your provider to find out if they can offer you a repayment plan before moving you to a prepay tariff.

This means repaying the debt in installments over a certain period.

If you are offered a repayment plan that seems difficult, it is worth going back to the provider to clarify the possibility of improving the terms.

Many energy companies have programs for customers who are struggling to pay their bills.

However, eligibility conditions depend on the provider, and the amounts of assistance depend on your financial circumstances.

For example, customers of British Gas or Scottish Gas facing payment difficulties can receive grants of up to £2000.

British Gas also helps through its British Gas Energy Trust and Individuals Family Fund.

No need to be a customer of British Gas to apply to the second fund.

EDF, E.ON, Octopus Energy, and Scottish Power also offer grants for those experiencing difficulties.

Thousands of vulnerable households do not receive additional help and protection without signing up for the Priority Services Register (PSR).

This service helps support vulnerable households, such as the elderly or disabled individuals.

Benefits include: warnings about power outages, free gas safety checks, and additional support in difficult situations.

Contact your energy provider to find out if you can apply.
