Manchester United signs young goalkeeper

According to The Sun: Manchester United has signed 16-year-old goalkeeper Charlie Hargreaves from Derby County.

Hargreaves, who has already played five matches for the England under-16 team, is now completing the final formalities for his transfer to the club.

He made his debut for Derby's youth team at the age of 15, and at 14, he was already on the bench for a match against United U18.

As a category one scholarship player, Hargreaves can transfer to another English club at any time during the season.

Former United youth team coach Neil Ryan gave Hargreaves his debut with the England under-15 team in 2024 and was present at the United U21 match in the International Cups League, where the team won against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday evening.

Goalkeepers who have been developed at United often face challenges in securing a spot in the club's first team.

Dean Henderson briefly held the position of first-choice goalkeeper for United in the Premier League in 2021, but then David de Gea reclaimed his starting spot.

Henderson was the first goalkeeper raised in the academy to hold this position since Gary Walsh, who occupied the role in 1987.

Currently, two academy goalkeepers from United are on loan at lower league clubs.

FA Youth Association Cup winner Radek Vitek, 21, has played all six matches for Bristol City in the Championship, while 19-year-old Eli Harrison regularly plays for Shrewsbury Town, who are battling to survive in League Two.

Changes are expected in United's goalkeeper lineup next summer.

Andre Onana is currently on loan at Trabzonspor, Tom Heaton will soon celebrate his 40th birthday, and his contract expires next year, while training goalkeeper Dermot Mee is likely to be released.

United signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day, but he has yet to take the field for the club.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper could be included in the youth squad for one of their upcoming matches in the Football League Trophy or the International Cup Premier League.

This deal underscores Manchester United's strategy to build up their youth team. Charlie Hargreaves, with his talent and potential, could become an important player in the future. It is also worth noting the trends in the club's goalkeeper position, as serious changes may soon occur that will impact the team’s roster.
