According to The Sun: Sir Alex Ferguson attended a Simply Red concert at Co-Op Live in Manchester last week.

Instead of traveling to London to watch Manchester United lose to Brentford, Ferguson chose to enjoy the performance of his longtime friend Mick Hucknall in his hometown.

Ferguson and Hucknall have been friends for many years. Hucknall once trained with United before a Champions League group stage match against Barcelona in 1994, where United lost 0-4.

During this visit, Hucknall also visited the rooms of his former teammates Paul Ince and Ryan Giggs in Catalonia when they shared a room.

Now, the United team is not the one Ferguson managed.

Don’t spoil my celebration

Xavi is a Manchester supporter but agrees with the weather conditions in the city.

The former Spain midfielder is out of work after leaving Barcelona last year, but his name is often mentioned among the potential candidates for the new United manager position.

Xavi spoke enthusiastically about United during impressive Europa League matches in February 2023. However, he joked that the fame of Manchester’s rainy weather could be a deterrent to his potential move to the club.

World Cup winner Xavi made his European debut for Barcelona in a thrilling match that ended in a 3-3 draw with United at Old Trafford in September 1998.

The 45-year-old coach has recently struggled with Barca on his way to the La Liga title in 2022-23, and his only managerial experience was with Al Sadd in Qatar.

While Xavi is out of work, he is investing in AI Kognia, a company used by many football clubs for analysis.

Shining on the field

United fans Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry played significant roles in Europe’s victory at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black last week and could make an appearance at Old Trafford in the future.

McIlroy received an invitation to Old Trafford in 2014 after winning The Open, and club representatives have stated that he and Lowry are always welcome guests.

Luke Littler was also a guest of United in January after his triumph at the World Darts Championship.

When McIlroy appeared on the United field 11 years ago, it happened on the opening day of the 2014-15 season. United won all their preseason matches, claiming the International Champions Cup in Miami.

One United representative noted that the team could achieve even greater success if McIlroy and Lowry received VIP treatment.

Off the pitch

Mick Cort's resignation as United's head of technical scouting was another anticipated step in the Ineos era at the club.

Cort once boasted to former United chief Ed Woodward of being a genius in recruitment. Woodward, even speaking to acquaintances in 2019, said he has nothing to do with recruitment, yet praised Cort.

But two years later, Woodward tried to take as much credit as possible for bringing Cristiano Ronaldo back, which surprised Cort, who even called a journalist to emphasize how far removed from the situation he actually was.

Despite this, Cort continued to maintain his reputation online, and he was often seen in the press box at Old Trafford analyzing matches.

Paying for mistakes

PGMOL officials acknowledged that Nathan Collins of Brentford should have been sent off during United's latest defeat at GTech Stadium.

Referee Craig Pawson awarded a penalty and a yellow card when Collins stopped Bryan Mbeumo, but VAR did not recommend a sending off, claiming that the United player did not control the ball.

PGMOL agrees that it was a mistake as Collins' foul stopped Mbeumo from having a clear view of the goal.

Apologies from PGMOL prompted some backlash on social media, where their post was accused of spreading misinformation.

SunSport learned that this led to official contact with X, as the officiating organization emphasized that their post was factual to explain the rationale behind their decision, whether it was right or wrong.

Groundhog Day

Longtime United match fan noted that Diogo Dalot has perfectly mastered the ‘hands on hips, gaze into the distance’ expression after heavy defeats.

Dalot stood motionless in front of the Brentford fans, adopting this pose. He was photographed again in the same pose after a heavy 0-4 defeat to Brentford three years ago.

Archives show that he struck the same pose after the 0-4 defeat to Everton in April 2019, in Brighton in May 2022, and in Crystal Palace in May 2024.

The loss to Everton occurred in Dalot's first season at United.

The United family

Under-18 team coach Darren Fletcher continues to impress behind the scenes at Carrington.

Fletcher, 41, aims to instill United’s DNA into his academy team, implementing quick attacks, active wingers, and varied strategies this season.

If he continues to inspire, Fletcher could be a real contender for the position of interim first-team manager in case of a coaching change.

United representatives are impressed with Fletcher’s work ethic and are confident that the Scotsman is destined to become an outstanding coach.

Fletcher returned to work days after undergoing knee surgery, which he had to address due to cartilage damage incurred during the United legends game against Celtic legends in early September.

His under-18 team is displaying excellent football and is early contenders for the title, despite a very young squad, with 14-year-old JJ Gabriel being the star of the team.

Fletcher’s team has yet to concede a goal in their first six matches until Man City handed them their first defeat of the season with a score of 4-2 in their last match.

United goalkeeper Frederick Heath received a red card after stopping City striker Freddy Lamba in a one-on-one situation in the 80th minute.

One of the main reasons Fletcher took this role in July is that both of his midfielder sons, Tyler and Jack, have been promoted to under-21.

Jack, alongside Shea Lacey, is close to breaking into the first team.
