Michael Carrick as a candidate for the head coach position at Manchester United

According to The Sun: Michael Carrick could become one of the candidates for the head coach position at Manchester United if the club decides to change management during Ruben Amorim's tenure.

While Amorim's support remains, the club is also considering other Premier League managers, including Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola and Fabian Hurzel.

Carrick in the role of interim coach

Michael Carrick, 44, previously managed Manchester United as an interim coach in November and December 2021, achieving two victories and one draw before being replaced by Ralph Rangnick.

The club legend was sacked from Middlesbrough in the summer. Currently, the team is performing well in the second division under the leadership of new manager, former Luton Town boss Rob Edwards.

Now that Carrick is not employed, he is among the favorites to be the next manager of United.

Carrick remains close to the club, as his son, Jacey, plays in the academy and is the captain of the under-16 team.

The former England international is still actively playing football, including for United's veteran teams, and travels with his former teammates, such as Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Park Ji-sung, Nemanja Vidic, and Bastian Schweinsteiger to South Korea.

Recently, Carrick also appeared as a commentator, interviewing Tottenham’s coach Thomas Frank for a Champions League broadcast on Prime Video.

Two years ago, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expressed hope that Carrick would one day become the permanent manager of United.

Solskjaer included Carrick in his coaching staff during his trophyless tenure as United manager from 2018 to 2021.

Carrick joined United for £18.6 million from Tottenham in 2006 and won numerous trophies, including five Premier League titles, a Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, two League Cups, and FIFA Club World Cup before retiring in 2018.
