The M&S Simply Food store in the center of Cwmbran will officially close its doors on Saturday, September 27.

This follows the brand's closure of a supermarket in Cwmbran in May 2019.

Shoppers were disappointed when they saw the announcement about the closure.

“We are closing on September 27. The nearest store is in Malpas, Newport.”

A company representative noted: “We regularly review our franchise store offerings to ensure the best M&S products for our customers.”

“Our limited range in the former WH Smith store in Cwmbran will no longer be available this autumn, but customers can always find their favorite M&S products alongside a wider selection at M&S Newport.”

Disappointment among shoppers

Customers actively discussed the news in the Facebook group “What’s New in Cwmbran.”

“I will really miss it. The Marks & Sparks store is really needed in Cwmbran,” wrote one user.

Another added: “It’s a shame. The selection may be small, but I always find something to buy there.”

“Please, Marks and Spencer, can we have a Simply Food store in Cwmbran,” urged a third shopper.

“We really need a proper M&S,” emphasized another user.

“I don’t like going to Newport with all the traffic, so I don’t even go!”

Reasons for M&S store closures

Three years ago, M&S announced changes to its business model.

The company plans to reduce the number of traditional department stores offering clothing, groceries, and home goods from 247 to 180, as well as open 100 new food halls by April 2026.

Chairman Archie Norman noted that M&S aims to leave 'struggling town centers.'

This has become part of a £500 million plan to revamp the company’s retail portfolio across the country.

Next month, the company confirmed the closure of its historic flagship store on September 27, unable to recover after COVID-19.

This popular supermarket has served customers in Wolverhampton since 1929 but will soon close its doors forever.

M&S first announced the closure of the store in July, stating that it had been 'performing poorly for some time.'

Management believes this is due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from which the store “never fully recovered.”

The closure of the M&S store in Cwmbran is part of a broader process of change within the company aimed at adapting to evolving market conditions and shopping habits. The absence of such an important player as M&S in the local infrastructure may significantly affect residents of the area who are accustomed to purchasing groceries at this store. Local residents express hope for the reestablishment of the store in the future, but currently, there are no alternatives.
