Assault on Ukrainian Territory on June 15, 2023

According to UATV: On June 15, 2023, the Russian military launched a large-scale assault on Ukraine, deploying 'Iskander-K' cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. This attack was part of a broader campaign that began on the night of June 2 with a strike using 'Kalibr' missiles. The enemy fired 70 missiles and 611 drones of various types.

Among the missiles used in this latest assault were 34 'Iskander-M' ballistic missiles, of which 15 were intercepted. Additionally, 5 'Zircon' missiles were launched and all were destroyed in the air. The attack targeted Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Sumy. In Kharkiv, a secondary strike resulted in the deaths of 5 rescue workers.

Comments and Assessments

Yuriy Ihnat, a representative of the Ukrainian military, noted that this attack differed from previous ones by using 'Iskander-K' missiles instead of 'Kalibr' ones. He also commented on the effectiveness of air defense systems, stating:

“Ballistic missiles can be intercepted by Patriot systems, and this time, 15 out of 34 'Iskander-M' missiles were shot down—a fairly high result given the nature of the attack.”

He further highlighted that 'of the 'Zircon' missiles, which also strike like ballistic weapons, we managed to shoot down five.'

This series of attacks underscores the ongoing hostilities within Ukraine and the challenges faced by its air defense forces.

The June 15 assault reflects an escalation in military operations in Ukraine, with Russia persistently attempting to deploy new weapon types. The strong performance of Ukraine's air defense systems suggests improved capabilities in countering modern threats. These developments could significantly influence the conflict's trajectory and the strategies of both sides in the near future.
