Kyiv Comes Under Heavy Attack on January 20, 2023

According to UATV: On January 20, 2023, Russian forces launched a large-scale, combined assault on Kyiv, resulting in one civilian casualty. A 59-year-old woman was injured in the Dniprovskyi district. The attack caused significant damage to residential buildings, vehicles, and critical infrastructure across the city. This assault is part of a broader pattern of strikes targeting Ukrainian cities since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Strikes were recorded at 36 separate locations in the capital. The attack damaged 20 parked cars and shattered windows and a fence at a private home in the Darnytskyi district. In the Desnianskyi district, debris from a downed drone fell onto a cemetery. Non-residential buildings and a school were also hit.

Impact and Aftermath of the Strike

The attack had a severe impact on the city's power supply. While electricity was restored to 162,000 apartments, a further 173,000 households remained without power. Russian forces employed a significant arsenal in the assault, including:

  • 18 ballistic missiles, including Iskander-M and S-300 types;
  • 15 Kh-101 cruise missiles;
  • 339 attack drones.

This event stands as one of the most substantial attacks on the Ukrainian capital in recent months.

This bombardment underscores the ongoing escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the persistent threat to Ukraine's national security.

The widespread loss of electricity for so many families highlights the attack's severe consequences, which extended beyond the immediate damage to housing and social infrastructure. Incidents like this demonstrate the urgent need to bolster defensive capabilities and ensure the safety of civilians during wartime.
