Defying a Court Ban, Media Outlets Unite to Publish Investigation Into 143 Apartments Tied to DBR Director’s Brother.
The 'Initiative 143' Investigation
According to Espreso.tv: In a show of solidarity, Ukrainian media outlets have banded together under the banner 'Initiative 143' to release a joint investigation. The report scrutinizes the legality of a developer linked to Oleksiy Sukhachov, the brother of the head of the State Bureau of Investigation (DBR). The probe uncovered that 143 real estate properties were once registered to Sukhachov’s brother, who reportedly has since divested ownership of these apartments.
The investigation also delves into a criminal case involving the developer of a residential complex. Notably, the DBR-led inquiry into allegedly unauthorized constructions was closed in August of last year. This raises serious questions about the developer’s compliance with the law and potential ties to the DBR’s leadership.
Publication Ban Defied
On July 7, the Pechersk District Court in Kyiv issued a ruling banning the publication of the investigation into the DBR director’s brother’s assets. In response, Anna Babinets, a representative of 'Initiative 143,' stated:
“Our colleagues are taking a risk by publishing this prohibited investigation.” — Anna Babinets
This underscores the gravity of the situation and the potential repercussions for journalists determined to shed light on the matter. The investigation thus brings to the forefront pressing issues of transparency and lawfulness in the construction sector, as well as possible abuses of power within the DBR’s administration.
This case highlights the critical role of independent journalism in Ukraine, especially when probing high-ranking officials and their potential conflicts of interest. The court-ordered publication ban risks curbing free speech and public access to information—both vital to a healthy society. Going forward, this affair could serve as a landmark example for other media outlets, illustrating the hazards they may face when covering sensitive subjects.
