Russian Medic Who Abused Ukrainian POWs Identified by Investigative Journalists.
Investigation and Legal Action by Ukrainian Authorities
According to Espreso.tv: Reporters from the 'Schemes' project have identified Vyacheslav Cherdantsev, a Russian medical worker involved in the mistreatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war at Penal Colony No. 7 in Pakino. Ukrainian law enforcement has launched a pre-trial investigation into his actions, highlighting the severity of the abuses occurring within that facility.
Cherdantsev, 48, serves as a medic at Colony No. 7 in Pakino, located in Russia’s Vladimir Region. He has worked in the penitentiary system for over a decade, holding his current position since 2015. According to reports, approximately thirty Ukrainian POWs have identified Cherdantsev, corroborating his participation in the abuses. Specific incidents include his refusal to provide medical treatment to prisoners, notably during a scabies outbreak—a decision that provoked outrage and deep concern.
Legal Consequences and Systematic Violence
Investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine have charged Cherdantsev in absentia with violating the laws and customs of war. Yaroslav Kirillov, who assisted Cherdantsev in his actions, has also been charged. Colony No. 7 in Pakino has become a site of systematic violence against prisoners of war, prompting a thorough investigation into these events. The proceedings are being overseen by the Office of the Prosecutor General, which is handling cases related to human rights violations during wartime.
This case underscores the gravity of human rights abuses committed in armed conflict and the critical role of international justice. The response from Ukrainian law enforcement reflects a firm commitment to holding accountable those responsible for brutal crimes against prisoners of war, as well as the need for comprehensive investigations into similar incidents in the future.
