Medicare Expands Coverage for GLP-1 Medications

According to Vox - Загальний: Starting July 1, Medicare began covering GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, giving millions of Americans access to this class of medications for just $50 per month. This development was made possible through the Bridge program, a one-year pilot initiative authorized under the Trump administration. Estimates suggest that roughly 12% of Americans—over 40 million people—have already used GLP-1 drugs such as Foundayo, Wegovy, and Zepbound.

Eligibility Requirements for GLP-1 Drugs

To qualify for GLP-1 medications, patients must meet specific criteria. These include individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher, as well as those with a BMI of 27 who also have related health conditions. According to KFF, approximately 14 million Medicare beneficiaries are either obese or overweight, with around 4 million likely eligible for the GLP-1 program.

Surveys indicate that 53% of those considering GLP-1 use are willing to share this information with their family members. Industry expert Alison Furman commented:

“This drug represents a physiological breakthrough, much like the technological shift brought by the smartphone.”
She also emphasized that
“when people eat less, they tend to prioritize quality over quantity.”

By May 2026, it is projected that one in five U.S. households will have at least one GLP-1 user, highlighting the growing popularity of these medications nationwide. This Medicare expansion could significantly improve treatment accessibility for millions of Americans struggling with weight issues and related health conditions.

The inclusion of GLP-1 drugs under Medicare reflects an increasing focus on obesity and its associated health risks in the United States. Making these medications available at a reduced price may transform treatment and prevention strategies while raising public awareness about the importance of weight management. As GLP-1 popularity is expected to rise, this could shift societal attitudes toward obesity treatment.
