The Mayor of London called for the confiscation of property of Russian businessmen.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, called on the UK's Department for Housing and Urban Development to confiscate the property of Russians associated with dictator Vladimir Putin.
According to the BBC, Sadiq Khan wrote a letter to the Secretary of State for Housing and Urban Development, Michael Gove.
The mayor is more interested in the proceeds from the sale of this property, which he proposes to transfer to Ukrainian refugees.
This property, which was purchased by Russians, valued at £1.1 billion (over $1.3 billion) in 2022, can be used to build 4,000 affordable residential houses, according to Transparency International.
"This may involve providing affordable housing to Ukrainians for whom London has become home after fleeing Ukraine due to Putin's invasion," noted Khan.
Khan also called for the reinstatement of the Ukraine Family Scheme, which allowed Ukrainians to reunite with relatives who had found asylum in the UK.
In addition, the Mayor of London demands the confiscation of the assets of Russian businessmen during the full-scale war in Ukraine, and the creation of a register of foreign property owners in the city. Khan also notes that current preventive measures are insufficient to avoid tax evasion and concealment of assets.
