Merz on peace with Russia: what security guarantees Ukraine will receive.
According to ТСН: After the signing of a peace agreement with Russia, Ukraine will need powerful armed forces and reliable security guarantees from its partners.
Statements by the German Chancellor
This information was announced by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a press conference. He emphasized:
“If a peace agreement is reached... Ukraine will still require strong armed forces and reliable security guarantees from its partners”. Merz also noted that this concerns not only Ukrainian interests but also European security interests, and these issues are being discussed with the USA and Ukraine.
Security Guarantees
The Chancellor stressed that a well-equipped army is the most important guarantee:
“Ukraine needs strong armed forces. That is why we are also discussing the future target size of the Ukrainian army”. European countries believe that the maximum number of servicemen for Ukraine should be 800,000, not 600,000 as previously proposed.
Negotiations and Territorial Concessions
Merz also pointed out that it is still early to talk about the deployment of international troops in Ukraine. He added that
“Ukraine should not be forced to make territorial concessions, and that the front line should be the starting point for any negotiations”.
The Head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak reported that the delegations of Ukraine and the USA will continue cooperation to determine further steps towards ending the war.
These statements once again underscore Ukraine's urgent need for reliable international security guarantees in the context of future negotiations. The discussion of the size and equipping of armed forces only confirms a serious approach to restoring stability and security in the region.
