Merz calls on Putin for immediate negotiations with Zelensky: what preceded it.
According to FREEДOM:
Merz's accusations against Putin
The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is using a tactic of stalling negotiations. He voiced these accusations during a press conference held on August 26 together with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, reports FREEДОМ.
Call for negotiations
Merz urged Putin to urgently start negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He also emphasized that the European Union countries are working on new sanctions against Russia.
“President Zelensky made it clear last week in Washington that he is ready to sit at the negotiating table with Putin in the coming days. Now it's up to Moscow. If Putin is serious about ending the violence, he will accept this offer. If the Russian side does not take this step, additional pressure will be needed. In this case, we in the European Union are working on further sanctions. Punitive tariffs are also not excluded by American President Trump,” — quotes the words of the federal chancellor the German news agency ntv.
Previous demands on Putin
Earlier, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called on Putin to conduct bilateral negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as soon as possible.
The opinions of German politicians regarding the necessity of negotiations with Russia reflect the growing concern of the international community over the situation in Ukraine. The European Union continues to search for ways to ensure peace in the region and is prepared to take additional measures if the Russian side does not make steps towards. Support for Ukraine remains important for many countries that believe that dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow is the only way to stability in the region.
