Metro 2026: Luggage Surcharge Could Push Ride Costs Up to 24 Hryvnias.
Overhaul of Metro Fare Surcharge System
According to Novyny.live: Starting in 2026, Ukraine's metro system will implement a new surcharge structure based on luggage size, affecting overall travel costs. While most passengers will pay a standard fare of 8 hryvnias, those carrying oversized baggage will face an additional fee equal to the price of one ticket. This means a trip with large luggage could total up to 24 hryvnias.
Baggage Transport Regulations
Under the updated rules, items that can be carried without extra charges include:
- small bags
- backpacks
- suitcases
- musical instruments in cases
- sports equipment
- baby strollers
- wheelchairs
- crutches
- walking canes
- cages or containers up to 120 cm
However, fees will apply to items exceeding 150 cm in length, objects with a total dimension of 120 cm or more across three measurements, and rolls with a diameter of at least 10 cm and a length of at least 100 cm.
Additionally, certain items are banned from metro premises, including:
- objects exceeding 200 cm in total of three dimensions
- large cages or containers
- rolls with a diameter over 15 cm and length exceeding 170 cm
- extremely long items—over 220 cm
- flammable, explosive, or toxic substances
These fare adjustments aim to enhance passenger safety and comfort while regulating baggage transport on public transit. For context, Ukraine's metro systems serve millions daily, making such changes significant for commuters and travelers alike.
The introduction of these new metro travel rules reflects Ukrainian authorities' efforts to modernize transport infrastructure in line with current safety and convenience standards.
Specifically, restrictions on oversized luggage could help prevent accidents and ensure a more pleasant experience for all riders. While the changes may improve service quality in the metro, they might also raise concerns among those who frequently travel with bulky items.
