Van Gerwen to miss Swiss Darts Trophy: Van der Voort reveals the reason.
Michael van Gerwen may miss the Swiss Darts Trophy
According to The Sun: Darts star Michael van Gerwen, according to former player Vincent van der Voort, is planning to withdraw from the Swiss Darts Trophy, which will take place in Basel next week. The three-time world champion will not compete in Switzerland, which is on the Euro Tour calendar.
PAVan Gerwen, who recently won the World Series of Darts Finals, has already qualified for the European Championship in October. However, he has not yet made it to the Players Championship qualifiers in Minehead.
Only the top 64 players will be able to participate in the Players Championship in November, and Van Gerwen currently ranks 103rd. His close friend Vincent van der Voort noted that he will now focus on the Players Championship events, so he will skip other tournaments, including the Swiss event.
This season, Van Gerwen has earned only £10,500 in prize money from the Players Championship, and he needs to at least double this amount to reach the top 64. His next chance to compete will be the tournament in Leicester next weekend, where van der Voort emphasized that he must deliver 'strong performances'. In the Darts Draait Door podcast, he said:
“This is where the focus is now. In these five tournaments he will compete in, he must catch up with that £10,000. Everything else has to take a back seat.”
“You cannot be satisfied if you haven't closed that £10,000 gap yet.”
Van Gerwen lost to Callan Rids in his last match at the Players Championship earlier this month. However, he later confirmed his status by winning the World Series of Darts final against Luke Littler.
Despite this, he was critical of himself during the Hungarian Darts Trophy, even though he won against Matthew Dennant 6-2 in the first match. Van Gerwen noted:
“When you play poorly, you need to face the truth. When things aren't going well, you always have to be honest, and I am an honest person.”
“This audience deserved more.”
Van Gerwen lost 6-5 to his compatriot Danny Noppert in the next round.

Missing the opportunity to compete in the Swiss tournament could serve as an additional motivation for him to showcase himself in future competitions. His focus on the Players Championship may lead to significant results that will impact his darts career. Will he be able to catch up with his competitors and return to the elite? Time will tell.
