Microsoft makes an exception for Europe: free Windows 10 updates extended.
According to Korrespondent.net: Microsoft has announced new opportunities for users in the US and Europe that will allow them to continue using Windows 10 for free. This came just a few days before the deadline for transitioning to Windows 11, reports TechXplore.
End of Windows 10 support
The official support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, which raises concerns among users and criticism from organizations that protect consumer rights. Many people fear that the lack of updates will make their devices vulnerable to cyberattacks and force them to buy new computers.
New options for users
To reduce the risks, the company has offered new options: European users will receive another year of free security updates if they log in with a Microsoft account. In the US, a similar option allows users to upload their Windows 10 profile to Microsoft’s cloud service, which will also enable them to receive updates for a year.
Previously, the company offered to extend the usage period for $30 for those whose computers cannot upgrade to Windows 11. Now in the US, users can choose: a free option with profile backup, a paid subscription for $30, or use 1000 Microsoft Rewards points accumulated through activity on the company’s services.
Public initiatives in Europe
In Europe, public organizations prompted Microsoft to change its position. The French organization HOP called for free updates at least until 2030, while the German Consumer Federation Verbraucherzentrale noted back in May that the corporation's actions 'restrict freedom of choice and raise concerns among consumers.'
According to Consumer Reports, as of August, about 650 million people worldwide remain on Windows 10.
It is worth noting that it was previously reported that Windows 11 has protection against quantum computer attacks.

Thus, Microsoft is trying to find a compromise between new technologies and the needs of users still working on Windows 10. By continuing to support this version of the operating system, the company responds to consumer calls and market demands, which may indicate changes in its product development strategy. We must wait for user feedback and further steps from the company in the context of digital transformation.
