Introducing the Bliksem EXO Project

According to Espreso.tv: Launched in Paris on July 14, 2023, the Bliksem EXO initiative aims to form an international consortium dedicated to developing a next-generation exoatmospheric missile defense system. This effort brings together several key defense contractors, including:

  • Airbus Defence and Space
  • Destinus
  • MBDA Deutschland
  • Safran Electronics & Defense
  • Thales

The system is designed to intercept medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles, marking a significant advancement in strengthening European defensive capabilities.

Project Timeline and Strategic Significance

Joint engineering work within the consortium is scheduled to begin in August 2026, with the first test of the exoatmospheric interceptor planned for 2027. Mykhailo Kokorich, the Bliksem EXO project coordinator, noted:

“Europe already has effective lower-tier missile defense systems, but it still lacks its own capability to intercept ballistic missiles in the upper layers of defense.”

Rob Jetten, another consortium representative, emphasized the project's importance, calling Bliksem EXO 'one of the industrial pillars of the anti-ballistic coalition.' Notably, this coalition includes the following countries:

  • United Kingdom
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Denmark
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Ukraine

The Bliksem EXO project is a critical component in bolstering Europe's security framework, enabling participating nations to deploy new missile defense technologies and reduce risks posed by ballistic missile threats.

The launch of Bliksem EXO reflects a strategic approach by European nations to enhance their defensive posture amid growing ballistic missile threats. Collaboration among leading defense companies and governments signals a commitment to building an integrated protection system that will provide a reliable shield for European states. It also underscores the value of joint efforts in advancing continental security, as coalition members aim to reach new technological heights in missile defense.
