Lithuanian Defense Minister Questions Russia’s Ability to Control Drones Over the Baltics.
Lithuanian Defense Minister’s Remarks
According to UATV: Robertas Kaunas, Lithuania’s defense minister, has cast doubt on whether Russia can deliberately redirect Ukrainian drones toward the Baltic states. He confirmed that Moscow is deploying electronic warfare systems against Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles. While acknowledging the clear use of such technology, Kaunas raised concerns about Russia’s capacity to coordinate these actions effectively.
Drone Incidents in the Baltic Region
The presence of drones in Baltic airspace stems from the war initiated by the Kremlin, escalating regional tensions and alarming neighboring countries. One notable incident occurred on the night of May 29, when a Russian drone crashed into a residential building in the Romanian city of Galați. Two people were injured, and approximately 70 residents were evacuated from nearby areas as a result.
Authorities responded swiftly by deploying two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter to intercept the drone. These actions underscore the severity of the threat drones pose to regional security. Kaunas stressed the need for continuous monitoring and readiness to address potential risks.
“These events highlight the importance of security in the Baltic states, where the threat from Russia remains a pressing concern.” – Robertas Kaunas
Heightened scrutiny of drone incidents points to the urgent need for stronger defensive measures in the region. Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia must maintain close cooperation with their allies to ensure stability and security in Baltic airspace, given the ongoing threats from Russia.
