Moldova’s Foreign Minister Backs Union with Romania: Key Details Emerge.
Growing Support for Moldova-Romania Unification
According to Espreso.tv: Nicu Popescu, the foreign minister of the Republic of Moldova, has publicly endorsed the idea of uniting his country with Romania through a potential referendum, urging an open conversation with citizens. He stated that he personally would vote in favor of such a move, underscoring his stance on closer integration with the neighboring nation.
On January 12, 2023, Moldovan President Maia Sandu also voiced support for reunification with Romania. In her remarks, she highlighted that
“it is becoming increasingly difficult to survive”, a comment likely pointing to the economic and social pressures the country faces. These statements from top political figures signal a rising interest in the prospect of merging the two states.
Talks and Avenues for Cooperation
Additionally, on January 14, 2023, Eugen Tomac, an advisor to Romania’s president, confirmed that Bucharest is ready to engage in negotiations with Moldova. This opens the door for further discussions on possible cooperation and integration scenarios between the two countries. As a result, the question of a potential unification referendum is gaining greater urgency within the political dialogue between Moldova and Romania.
The declarations from Moldovan leaders about uniting with Romania reflect not only domestic political sentiments but also the foreign policy challenges Moldova faces. Economic hardships and social issues may be driving the population to consider alternative development paths, such as integration with a neighboring country. Meanwhile, the Romanian advisor’s statement demonstrates Bucharest’s willingness to engage actively, which could lead to new opportunities for bilateral collaboration.
