Pavlo Hrod on dual citizenship: why Ukrainians abroad hesitate.
According to inkorr.com: The President of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) Pavlo Hrod expressed his thoughts regarding dual citizenship for Ukrainians living abroad. He noted that some of them are reluctant to apply for this citizenship, waiting for the end of the general mobilization. Hrod, who was born in Canada, explained that one of the factors holding him back is the possibility of complicating his departure from the country due to potential military service.
If you wait to obtain dual citizenship until after the mobilization is over, that's better. This is one of the major barriers today to obtaining dual citizenship.
The law on dual citizenship in Ukraine, adopted on June 18, significantly simplified the procedure for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship. This document allows the legalization of foreign citizenship and obtaining additional passports without the need to renounce Ukrainian citizenship. The law also provides for a simplified procedure for foreigners who serve in the military in Ukraine.
New rules regarding dual citizenship
The law includes certain restrictions for public officials and judges regarding dual citizenship. That is, a person with a passport from another country who is a citizen of Ukraine is considered only a Ukrainian citizen on the territory of Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, signed this law on July 15.
Ukrainians living abroad have their thoughts regarding obtaining dual citizenship, taking into account the possible risks and restrictions associated with military service and the new rules established by Ukrainian legislation.
This process represents an important step for many Ukrainians outside of Ukraine who seek to balance military obligations with the possibility of an easier life in other countries. And while the law provides certain advantages, the issue of obtaining dual citizenship remains a subject of discussion due to the possible consequences for the legal status of Ukrainian citizens abroad.
