Who Under 25 Can Be Drafted in Ukraine? A Breakdown of Mobilization Rules.
Mobilization Age: Before and After 25
According to Novyny.live: In Ukraine, the general mobilization age starts at 25, but certain groups younger than that may still be called up. This includes reservists, volunteers, and reserve officers, who can be mobilized before reaching that age.
Citizens registered for military service who are over 25 but under 60 are subject to conscription. Meanwhile, those under 25 are classified as conscripts. It is important to note that reservists are former service members who completed mandatory service or served under contract. This group holds a special status and can be included in mobilization efforts.
Volunteers and Reserve Officers
Under mobilization rules, volunteers can join the Armed Forces of Ukraine before reaching the standard mobilization age. This allows young people to contribute to national defense even if they are not yet 25. Reserve officers—those who earned military ranks during higher education—can also be mobilized before turning 25.
Additionally, the first tier of the operational reserve consists of former military personnel with combat experience who are no older than 40. This highlights the value of experience and training in military operations, which can boost mission effectiveness during mobilization.
Given ongoing conflicts and the need to ensure national security, Ukraine requires a well-functioning mobilization system. Setting age limits and exceptions helps bring young people with military backgrounds into the defense effort, potentially improving the readiness of the Armed Forces. It also encourages civic engagement among youth, which can strengthen patriotism across society.
