President Zelensky Holds Strategy Session on Poland-Ukraine Relations

According to Espreso.tv: On July 17, the Polish Sejm adopted a resolution labeling the Volyn events as 'genocide,' adding urgency to bilateral talks. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky convened a high-level meeting dedicated to shaping Ukraine’s policy toward Poland, where he outlined key priorities for strengthening ties between the two nations.

'I chaired a meeting on our policy toward Poland. The priorities are clear: all of Europe needs good-neighborly, equal, and mutually beneficial relations built on respect.' Volodymyr Zelensky

Zelensky committed to opening all archives of the Security Service of Ukraine and the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine that relate to the tragic 20th-century events in Volyn. During the meeting, several concrete steps were also outlined, including:

  • Decisions to issue a significantly larger number of permits for search and exhumation work.
'Third: there will be decisions to issue a substantially higher number of permits for search and exhumation work, and together with the Polish side, we must ensure greater capacity to carry out such efforts.' Volodymyr Zelensky

Expanding people-to-people dialogue was another key topic of discussion, underscoring Ukraine’s intention to build productive relations with its neighbor.

This meeting took place against a backdrop of heightened tensions in Ukrainian-Polish relations, triggered by the Polish Sejm’s resolution. The declassification of archives and joint search operations could serve as important steps toward reconciliation and improved bilateral ties. Fostering societal dialogue also highlights Ukraine’s efforts to resolve historical disputes and strengthen its partnership with Poland amid current challenges.
