NATO Membership Postponed: 54% of Moldovans Oppose Joining the Alliance.
Why Moldova Won't Be Joining NATO Anytime Soon
According to Novyny.live: Moldova's Foreign Minister, Mihai Popșoi, has stated that the country's accession to NATO is unlikely at this stage due to insufficient public support. According to the latest survey data from the sociological firm iData, published in May, 54.5% of respondents oppose joining the North Atlantic Alliance, while only 33.6% are in favor. This marks a clear majority against membership, shaping the government's cautious stance on the issue.
Popșoi emphasized that any decision to join NATO—or any other international organization—must reflect the will of the people. He remarked:
'If there is broad public support, it could be considered a serious prospect and placed on the agenda.' Mihai Popșoi
The foreign minister also underscored the critical role of security, noting that 'only NATO can provide us with real security guarantees.' This statement highlights the strategic dilemma Moldova faces: balancing public opinion with pressing defense needs.
Regional tensions further complicate the picture. Russian troops stationed in Transnistria continue to pose a security threat to Moldova. In response, the country plans to seek compensation from Russia for damages in the energy sector and pollution of the Dniester River. Against this backdrop of public sentiment and geopolitical challenges, Moldova's path to NATO membership remains uncertain.
According to Popșoi, the lack of citizen support is the primary obstacle preventing Moldova from pursuing NATO membership at this time. This underscores the significant role public opinion plays in shaping the nation's foreign policy. The volatile regional situation, particularly the strain caused by Russia's military presence, further highlights the importance of security considerations—factors that may influence Moldova's future steps in international relations and strategic partnerships.
