The Crisis of British Pubs: Over 10 Establishments Close Daily Due to Bankruptcy.
A Crisis Situation in the Hospitality Sector
According to The Sun: Every day in the UK, more than ten pubs, restaurants, and hotels close according to a survey.
Hospitality leaders have appealed to Chancellor Rachel Reeves for support for their industry during the autumn budget.

Alarmingly, in July, the service sector, which includes pubs, cafes, restaurants, and hotels, recorded 327 bankruptcies.
This is a 5% increase compared to June when 306 establishments closed, indicating that more than 10 establishments disappear daily.
“The rise in bankruptcies is a worrying trend that we have predicted for several months,” said Saxon Mosley, an analyst at RSM UK.
He also added: “The leisure and hospitality sector has had a tough year due to rising staffing costs and inflation, which is putting pressure on businesses that are already suffering from low consumer confidence.”
“Many operators are already in survival mode,” Mosley noted.
Hospitality is crucial for job creation and is a cornerstone of the UK economy, therefore the situation in this sector raises serious economic concerns for the Chancellor.
“There is a need for reform of the business tax system and support for the sector in response to the recent tax increases to reduce pressure on operators and allow them to keep more businesses afloat,” he concluded.
Trends in Numbers
Earlier this month, a report by Buchler Phillips showed that 1,706 restaurants and hotels disappeared from our cities in the first half of 2025.
In June, over 300 bankruptcies were also recorded, marking the first instance of increasing bankruptcies in the hospitality sector for three consecutive months since 2022 when 296 establishments closed in May.

The crisis in the hospitality sector in the UK requires urgent measures to stabilize the situation. Establishments that are vital to the economy are facing significant financial difficulties due to rising costs and declining consumer activity. If effective measures are not taken, the number of bankruptcies could increase significantly, which would have serious consequences for employment and the overall economic situation.
