Russian Winter Offensive Backfires, Suffering Losses Eight Times Higher Than Ukraine's.
Frostbite for the Offensive: Why Russia's Winter Push Is Proving Costly
According to Novyny.live: Despite attempting to leverage freezing conditions for battlefield gains, Russian forces are suffering casualty rates eight times higher than their Ukrainian counterparts. This assessment was provided on January 21 by Danilo Pologukhno, head of the KRAKEN 1654 Special Operations Center control point. He reported that Russian troops are advancing from Kreminna towards Yampil, moving through the Serebryansky Forest.
Small, isolated Russian units have reached the outskirts of Lyman, only to be destroyed or captured by Ukrainian defenders. Pologukhno noted that the enemy is trying to exploit deteriorating weather for its assaults, operating under the assumption that frost hinders the surveillance capabilities of Ukrainian drones. This tactic is a common feature of winter warfare, where armies historically seek any advantage. However, Ukrainian forces maintain control of the situation, even as sub-zero temperatures slightly reduce drone loiter time.
'The enemy is using the worsening weather to advance. Russian command believes the frost interferes with our drone observation and is therefore sending in units. The sub-zero temperature affects the drones—they can hover for a bit less time—but we see all this movement, and the enemy is being effectively destroyed.' — Danilo Pologukhno
Consequently, despite Russian military efforts, Ukrainian troops are demonstrating resilience and a continued capacity for effective defense.
The Frontline Stalemate
The frontline situation remains tense, yet Ukrainian military personnel, having adapted to the harsh conditions, continue to successfully repel Russian attacks. The Russian army's high losses underscore the effectiveness of Ukrainian defensive strategies, which have so far allowed them to maintain control over key positions. The dynamics of the combat highlight the critical importance of both technical capabilities and troop morale during winter operations.
