Morrisons launches smart carts in the UK: how they will change shopping.
According to The Sun: MORRISONS is introducing significant changes to its shopping carts that could help you save money.
Consumers are already expecting substantial innovations in supermarkets as Morrisons plans to launch high-tech carts that will help keep track of spending.
Morrisons is preparing to implement high-tech cartsPA MEDIAThe store is collaborating with the American technology company Instacart for the first launch of AI-powered 'Caper Carts' in the UK market.
These modern carts, which are already popular in the US in chains like Kroger and Coles, will appear in one of Morrisons' stores at the beginning of 2026, with plans to implement them in other locations later.
Equipped with touchscreens, sensors, and built-in scales, these innovative carts allow shoppers to scan items while shopping, weigh fruits and vegetables directly in the cart, and track their total expenditure in real-time.
After finishing shopping, the final cost can be confirmed by scanning a barcode at the self-service checkout.
Thanks to this technology, consumers will be able to see immediately how much their purchase costs, helping them avoid unpleasant surprises at the register.
The carts will also work in conjunction with the Morrisons More Card loyalty program, providing personalized discounts and bonuses.
David McIntosh, Senior Director of Connected Stores at Instacart, noted: 'Caper Carts offer a seamless way to combine the convenience and personalization of e-commerce with the inspiration and discovery that happen in physical stores.'
Arrival in the UK
Caper Carts are already successfully used in 100 cities in the US, including chains like Wegmans and Schnucks, but this is Instacart's first partnership in the UK.
The launch of this project will allow Morrisons to get ahead of its competitors while aiming to implement futuristic shopping technologies in British supermarkets and change millions' approach to shopping.
Cart technologies in other supermarkets
Supermarkets like Asda, Tesco, and Sainsbury's are already offering handheld scanners that allow customers to track expenses while shopping.
However, Amazon Fresh was the first major retailer to introduce a store without checkout. Customers simply entered the store, picked items, and left without scanning products or paying at the register.
This used cameras and artificial intelligence to track items consumers picked. Payment was automatically charged to the selected payment method.
However, Amazon, after receiving customer feedback, later abandoned this technology.
Meanwhile, the Co-op chain has introduced electronic labels as part of a new program that allows customers to receive exclusive discounts.
These labels are already available in 700 stores, but Co-op plans to expand them to over 1,600 by the end of the year.
How to save at Morrisons
Purchasing delivery can significantly reduce costs for online shopping, especially if you often buy from Morrisons.
The cost depends on the type of service – annual, semi-annual, or monthly.
It is recommended to calculate costs compared to how much you spend on delivery without it.
Morrisons offers a wide range of 'ugly' vegetables that may be cheaper than regular ones.
Make sure to check websites like Quidco and TopCashback before placing an order; these sites pay you for shopping.
Look for discount codes on MyVoucherCodes.co.uk and VoucherCodes.co.uk to find out about possible discounts at checkout.
Follow your favorite stores on social media to stay updated on promotions.
Morrisons regularly refreshes its range of budget items, with prices starting from 20 pence.
Consumers can earn points through the More Than loyalty program, accumulating them during purchases.
The more points, the more discounts, plus additional promotions available for program members.
The implementation of Caper Carts technology at Morrisons could radically change the shopping process, providing consumers with more convenience and control over expenses. In a world where saving is becoming increasingly important, such innovations could significantly impact shopping habits.Read also
