Military Center Employee Accused of Extorting Bribe from Fallen Soldier's Mother.
Allegations at Tulchyn Military Recruitment Center
According to TSN.ua: A worker at the Tulchyn Territorial Recruitment Center (TRC) in Vinnytsia Oblast is under investigation for allegedly demanding a bribe from the mother of a deceased soldier in exchange for processing a state death benefit payment. The Vinnytsia Specialized Defense Prosecutor's Office of the Southern Region is handling the case, which came to light through cooperation between the suspect and the victim that began in April 2023. This case highlights ongoing challenges with corruption within some Ukrainian institutions during the war.
Case Details and Charges
According to the investigation, the suspect demanded $5,000 for her influence after the payment was approved in December 2023. The victim subsequently transferred 190,000 hryvnias to the suspect's bank account. The suspect has been formally notified of suspicion under two articles of Ukraine's Criminal Code: Part 2 of Article 369-2 for abuse of influence, and Part 1 of Article 209 for legalizing (laundering) criminally obtained property.
A court has already ruled to suspend the suspect from her official duties and has imposed a preventive measure. This situation raises serious concerns about ethics and professionalism within institutions meant to support the families of fallen service members. The investigation is ongoing, and its outcome could significantly impact the suspect's future.
This incident underscores the critical need for honesty and transparency in government agencies, particularly those involved in social protection. By allegedly demanding bribes from the families of deceased soldiers, TRC employees undermine public trust in state institutions. Given the gravity of the accusations, the investigation's findings could have far-reaching consequences for Ukraine's military recruitment and social support systems.
