Maine Salmon Farm Faces Scrutiny: Investigation Uncovers 133 Animal Welfare Violations.
Repeated Abuse at Cooke Aquaculture Hatchery Draws Concern
According to Vox - Загальний: An investigation by the nonprofit Animal Outlook has documented ongoing mistreatment of fish at a Cooke Aquaculture hatchery in Maine, with reports filed in both 2019 and 2025. Despite the company’s promises to implement reforms, conditions at the facility have not improved.
The initial undercover probe in 2019 exposed cruelty at the salmon hatchery, sparking widespread backlash. In 2025, Animal Outlook revisited the site and found similar welfare issues persisting. The latest inquiry identified 133 incidents involving improper killing, rough handling, and other welfare breaches. Cooke Aquaculture, led by CEO Glenn Cooke, is the world’s largest privately owned seafood producer.
Witness Accounts and Official Response
Erin Wing, who worked at the salmon hatchery for nearly three months in 2019, described witnessing abusive treatment of the fish.
Glenn Cooke commented on the situation, stating: 'I deeply regret that this happened.'
Callum Brown, weighing in on the findings, added: 'It looks like they have a systemic welfare problem at this farm.' In response to Animal Outlook’s report, the Maine Department of Agriculture has launched its own investigation, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations.
This case highlights growing concerns over ethical standards in the seafood industry, particularly regarding corporate commitments to animal welfare. Repeated violations may fuel increased pressure from consumers and activists demanding stricter oversight and industry-wide reforms.
The probe by the Maine Department of Agriculture could mark a pivotal step toward changing practices related to fish welfare on industrial farms.
