Three-Year Sentence for Avoiding Conscription

According to Novyny.live: A court in Ukraine's Zhytomyr region has sentenced a man to three years in prison for evading military mobilization. He was found guilty under Article 336 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for failing to report after receiving a draft summons without a valid excuse. This conviction stands despite a military medical commission having previously declared him fit for service.

Case Details

The military medical commission deemed the man fit for duty on March 13, 2025. According to the ruling, he was required to report to a recruitment center in Korosten by 6:00 AM on June 27, 2025. However, he refused the summons and did not appear at the Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support (TCC). Consequently, police officers located and detained him on June 26, 2025, as he was officially listed as a wanted person for his failure to report.

This trial and its outcome underscore the severe consequences for draft evasion in Ukraine, particularly under the current martial law. Evading military duty can lead not only to criminal penalties but also to social repercussions, including stigma and challenges with reintegration into society. This case reflects the heightened enforcement of military obligations, a critical measure for maintaining national defense capabilities during the ongoing conflict. Since the full-scale invasion, Ukraine has enforced strict mobilization laws to bolster its armed forces.
