The oldest bird in the world, Wisdom, is becoming a mother again: she is 75 years old

According to ТСН: A 75-year-old female Laysan albatross known as Wisdom is preparing to become a mother again. This species of bird, renowned worldwide, has recently returned to its nesting site on Midway Atoll, located in the central Pacific Ocean near Hawaii.

Return to the Nest

Laysan albatrosses, like Wisdom, return to the same place every year to nest. When they reach their reserve at the northwest edge of the Hawaiian archipelago, the birds reunite with their partners. If all goes well, they will lay one egg and stay on the atoll for nesting.

Early Arrival

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Wisdom arrived a bit earlier this year than usual. Her partner from last year has not yet been spotted.

The Life History of Wisdom

In 1956, biologist Chandler Robbins first identified and banded Wisdom when she laid her first egg. Since then, she has laid between 50 and 60 eggs and has become the mother of 30 chicks over her lifetime.

Last year, Wisdom became the oldest known wild bird in the world to successfully lay an egg at approximately 74 years of age.

This unique story of Wisdom highlights not only the longevity and resilience of albatrosses but also the importance of protecting their habitat. Birds of this species face many threats, so each successful nesting is a positive signal for their population. Observing these birds serves as an important reminder of how vulnerable our natural ecosystems can be.
