Security guarantees for Ukraine

Security guarantees for Ukraine must be clear and legally binding. It is important to take all aspects into account to avoid ambiguities in the legal field. Ukraine needs security guarantees that would bring it closer to NATO membership. However, the 5th article of the Alliance alone is not enough. This opinion was expressed by Doctor of Political Science Igor Petrenko on the air of the FREEДОМ channel.

'It is always necessary to learn the material. In the 5th article of NATO it is stated that an attack on one is perceived as an attack on all. It further states that countries conduct consultations and determine the level of involvement they are willing to engage in the question of support. This means it can be sending their troops, direct participation in conflict with aviation, ground forces, naval forces, and so on. It can also mean participation in the form of military aid, humanitarian aid, sending weapons, sharing intelligence, and so on. Therefore, this list does not have clear instructions,' analyzed the speaker.

This indicates that the 5th article of NATO does not always mean a decisive military response.

'This is both the strength and the weakness of the Alliance in reality. That is, the one who is attacked can count on both minimal assistance and maximum application of efforts,' noted the political scientist.

Ukraine's Position

Ukraine and its president Volodymyr Zelensky seek to obtain clear security guarantees from partners.

'It is necessary to have certain points spelled out that are important to us. What we really needed at the beginning of the war. This is closing the sky. The second is uninterrupted supplies of weapons of all types. That is, we need what is minimally clear to us, what we can definitely or guaranteed count on in the event of renewed aggression,' summarized Petrenko.

Ukraine remains in the focus of international politics, seeking to strengthen its position through obtaining clear and specific guarantees from Western partners. The security situation remains tense, and calls for improved cooperation with NATO are becoming increasingly relevant, especially against the backdrop of escalating external threats. Thus, understanding Ukraine's demands in the context of international security is an important step in maintaining stability in the region.
